8 Reasons Why You Should Incorporate more HIIT Workouts
As someone who loves all things intentional, HIIT (High Intensity Interval Training) can seem like your worst nightmare. (Im sorry… you want me to run how fast?!?!) But to the average busy lifestyle person this is the ideal workout. That led me to question. Is it really THAT effective? How GOOD can it actually be for you? Dont worry! Poppy investigated for you <3
8 Reasons Why You Should Incorporate More HIIT:
Improved Cardiovascular Fitness - HIIT involves alternating between periods of intense exercise and recovery periods. This variation challenges the cardiovascular system, leading to improved heart and lung capacity.
Efficient Calorie Burning - HIIT workouts typically burn more calories in a shorter amount of time compared to steady-state cardio exercises due to the body having to work overtime to rest faster.
Enhanced Metabolic Rate - HIIT can boost your metabolism, both during and after exercise. This effect, known as excess post-exercise oxygen consumption (EPOC) or the "afterburn," means your body continues to burn calories at a higher rate even after you've finished exercising.
Time Efficiency - HIIT workouts are (and can) usually shorter than traditional cardio workouts because of their intensity and effectiveness.
Variety and Adaptability - HIIT can be adapted to different fitness levels and preferences. You can modify the intensity, duration, and exercises used in intervals to suit your fitness goals and abilities. Basically, this is your personal workout
Fat Loss and Muscle Retention - HIIT is effective for reducing body fat while maintaining muscle mass. This is beneficial for overall body composition and can contribute to a leaner, more toned appearance. This is the supermodel look
Health Benefits - Regular HIIT workouts can lead to improvements in insulin sensitivity, blood pressure, and cholesterol levels, reducing the risk of chronic diseases like type 2 diabetes and cardiovascular disease
Mental Benefits - HIIT can be mentally stimulating due to its challenging nature and the variety it offers. It can improve mood and reduce feelings of anxiety or depression, similar to other forms of aerobic exercise. Basically another form of workout therapy.
My only caveat to this is to be careful not to overdo it. It is no longer as effective if you can only do it one day a week because you are really killing yourself day one and struggling to recover day 2, 3, 4, and 5. Again, take this at your own level. Challenge yourself a bit but really understand and know your limits.
If you're a workout junkie like me who's hitting it 5 maybe 6 days a week then try swapping out one or two days with some HIIT. Cardio can be dreadful, but it is seriously good for you if you're approaching it in the right way. The goal is not to kill ourselves, but to make us stronger!
